Today you’re going to learn all about upright vacuum cleaners! Because a clean house is always important, especially if you have kids in the house. Everyone needs a good vacuum cleaner. Whether you have a brand new house or a house built in the ’70s, or even if you rent an apartment. Either way, everyone has a use for a good quality vacuum cleaner, and that’s what we’re going to show you today.
The question is, which vacuum cleaners are the best these days? Well, we were given the opportunity to test and review five of the best vacuum cleaners on the market. We set up five white carpets in our testing facility and did all kinds of different tests on them. Some of the tests we ran on these white carpets include dirt from kids’ shoes, a box of Cheerios dropped on the carpet, dog hair all over the place, and a few shoes with sand all over them.
In the end, we based our review on numerous factors such as ease of use, affordability, maneuverability, easy to clean, and overall vacuum suction. We found that many of these vacuums surpassed our expectations and we couldn’t have been more thrilled about the results. All five of these vacuums will handle anything you try to clean with them unless it’s a black dye or something like that. Either way, we hope you enjoy this article!
1. Are Upright Vacuum Cleaners Any Good?
Upright vacuum cleaners have been around since 1926 and it goes without saying that they have only gotten more diverse throughout the years. Nowadays we have upright vacuum cleaners that can make your carpets look as if it wasn’t even dirty or messy! (If you would like to learn a little history about upright vacuum cleaners, here’s an article you can check out.)
Upright vacuum cleaners are your typical household vacuum cleaner. It has a long handle for you to grab, a canister where all the dirt goes, and a base on the floor which sucks the dirt into the vacuum. It’s a pretty typical concept for a modern way to clean your rugs and carpets. Oh yeah, that brings me to another point, modern upright vacuum cleaners are great for hardwood floors as well.
Some people are worried that upright vacuum cleaners will scratch the wood but that’s only if your floor is made of softwood. If your hardwood is oak, you will be fine.
In regards to if upright vacuum cleaners are any good or not, we would have to conclude that “yes” they most definitely are. Upright vacuum cleaners are phenomenal and all five of the vacuums you’re going to see today are top-of-the-line and will work great in any household. We really didn’t find any drawbacks when it came to comparing these vacuums. They all do the same task and they all do it well. The only difference in each of them is weight, canister size, and extra add-ons.
2. Will An Upright Vacuum Cleaner Clean Hardwood Floors?
Back in the early days of upright vacuum cleaners, it wouldn’t be a good idea to use them on hardwood floors. Nowadays though, upright vacuum cleaners have no problem cleaning hardwood floors. Soft bristles on the floor-level rotating brush make this possible. In fact, some of them are even coated with a lightweight rubber-type material to prevent the possibility of scratching.
In addition, many new vacuum cleaners have softer wheels than they had in the past. The softer wheels make it even better for your floors because softer plastic is much easier on a hard surface compared to hard plastic.
3. How Much Do Upright Vacuum Cleaners Weigh?
When you’re shopping for a new vacuum cleaner for your home, you want something that’s going to be lightweight, right? Weight was one of the bigger aspects we made sure to look into with these vacuum cleaners. We wanted to make sure that anyone at any age would be able to comfortably lift and move these vacuum cleaner with ease.
The Eureka NEU Airspeed was the lightest vacuum that we tested. This vacuum only weights 7.7 lbs and let me tell you, this vacuum cleaner felt like a feather while pushing it around. If you can lift a 12-pack of soda from the grocery store that weighs 10 lbs, then you should have no problem lifting this vacuum cleaner. In fact, every vacuum cleaner on our list weighs 15 lbs or less.
4. Are Upright Vacuum Cleaners Easy To Maneuver?
Maneuverability has gotten significantly better throughout the years as well. Ten years ago you would have to make squared 90 degree sweeps with your vacuum. Nowadays we have this new pivot technology where the vacuum can tilt and roll in just about any direction you want. This makes it easier to get the vacuum into what would normally be hard places to reach!
The weight of these vacuums also plays a role in maneuverability as well. The fact that these vacuums are much lighter means you can push them around with ease and not have to worry about fatigue.
The only vacuum on our list that DOES NOT have this maneuverability is the Oreck. The Oreck is lightweight, but it’s harder to maneuver because it doesn’t have a pivot ball. Oreck is still old-school and has not-yet designed a newer vacuum with this new technology. This doesn’t mean the Oreck isn’t any good though, that’s not what we’re saying. We’re just saying that the other four on our list are easier to maneuver.
5. Are Upright Vacuum Cleaners Easy To Clean?
All of the vacuum cleaners on our list are extremely easy to clean. The Oreck doesn’t need to be cleaned because it’s not “bagless”, but the others can be cleaned. When it came to cleaning these vacuums, we were looking to see if dust or pet hair got stuck in the corners and this never happened with any of the vacuums that we tested. In fact, as soon as we popped the bottom of the canisters off, the dust and hair just came right out of the bottom with ease.
My product testers and I all agreed that the Shark Navigator was the easiest to clean. All you do is unlatch the canister from two sides and the canister just pops right off. It’s that simple. In addition, when cleaning the canister with hot water, it was very easy and there weren’t any build-ups of dust in the corners or anything like that.
6. How Much Does A New Vacuum Cost?
Modern vacuum cleaners are appropriately priced (except for Dyson’s). Most vacuum cleaners are going to range anywhere from $100 upwards to $300 for a good and decent vacuum cleaner. Most of the vacuum cleaners on our list are inexpensive and we feel most people can afford them with ease. In fact, our #1 vacuum cleaner, the Eureka only costs $74.99 and will last for years. Vacuum cleaners aren’t all that expensive at all.
It’s best to get something that is in the medium price range and from a brand that you know you can trust. That’s why we only tested and reviewed vacuums that are of brands that are popular and talked about quite often.
7. Top 5 Best Upright Vacuum Cleaners
Get ready, because these are some of the best vacuum cleaners on the market right now! A little side note though, we did not include any Dyson vacuum cleaners. We didn’t include Dyson’s because we wanted to make sure that the vacuums we were reviewing were vacuums that most people can afford. In our opinion, there’s no need to spend upwards of $500+ on a vacuum cleaner, it’s not necessary. Below are our top 5 best upright vacuum cleaners!

8. Wrap Up
Overall, we liked the Eureka at #1 the best. It’s extremely lightweight, easy to carry from room to room, and its dust cup is extremely easy to dump. In addition, it’s cheaper than the rest of the vacuum cleaners we listed as well.
The Oreck at #3 is pretty ugly but don’t let the looks of it deceive you, Oreck’s have always been ugly but they are one of the best vacuums out there. There’s a reason why many hotels use them and it’s because they are extremely powerful. As far as the best vacuums are concerned, these were our top 5 and were based on many different factors. Either way, all 5 of them are great and will work great in any dirty situation.
