1. How Long Does A Family Camping Tent Last?
When you’re in the market for a new family camping tent, one of the first questions you will be asking yourself is “how many years will I get out of this tent?”. This very question can be a tough one to answer because it really varies from family to family. Some families go camping 5+ times per year, while others only go once per year.
The answer you’re looking for will depend on various factors such as usage, duration, and weather types. When it comes to usage, we’re talking about how often you and your family will be going camping. As far as duration, how long do you expect you and your family will be camping? Will it be a few days? A week? Two weeks? Then you have to figure in the weather types as well. You can’t control what kind of weather your tent will be up against so this portion isn’t predictable.
Instances On How Long A Family Camping Tent Will Last
Instance #1 – Let’s say you’re a family of 4 and you go camping 5+ times per year. When you and your family go camping, you spend 4-7 days using the tent. Then we’ll say it rains 1 night each time you go camping. Overall, this should be able to last 2-3 years with no problems at all. This is assuming you are taking proper care of your tent after each use. After 2-3 years, the tent material will eventually start to fade and get “thin” due to usage and wear & tear.
Instance #2 – Now let’ assume that you’re still a family of 4 expect you only go camping once or twice per year. When your family goes camping, you only spend 3-5 days at a time in your tent. We’ll also say that it rains 1 night each time you go camping, just to be fair. Overall, this tent should be able to last you and your family 3-5 years with no problem at all. Again, this is assuming you are taking proper care of your tent after each use. Same with the above, after 3-5 years, your tent material will eventually start to fade and get “thin” due to overall usage and wear & tear.
2. Are Family Camping Tents Easy To Set Up And Take Down?
In simple terms, yes, family camping tents are very easy to set up and takedown. In the past, it used to take a while because most family-sized camping tents were put together by metal poles. Now we have carbon fiber poles that connect to one another to form a strong and sturdy shell. However, some family-sized tents do still use the metal pole method.
All tents are different when it comes to setting them up and taking them down because all tents are shaped differently. Generally, though, you will have two long poles that cross at the top, from corner to corner. Then you will usually have two shorter poles that go the opposite direction on the left and right sides of the tent. Sometimes you will have an additional small pole that will go in the front that acts as a hood for the entryway.
Overall, family tents are easy to set up and can easily be set up in a matter of 20 minutes or less. There’s really not much to it, just put the poles together, and then put them through the holes that they belong in. After that, just take your stakes and stake each corner into the ground.
3. Are Family Camping Tents Waterproof?
Most family camping tents by big-name brands such as Coleman are extremely waterproof. These tents are built to last and withstand just about any amount of rain that gets thrown at them. The Coleman tents use inverted seams and covered zippers which seal out any water that tries to get in. In addition, they also use a patented flooring system by WeatherTech. If you don’t know what WeatherTech is, it’s a brand that makes all-weather floor mats for the automotive industry. This material is extremely weather-resistant.
As far as fabric goes, most of these tents use a polyguard fabric that is able to allow air through the pores, but not moisture. This is especially important on those humid days when it feels like a sticky jungle outside. It’s nice to be able to stay dry inside the tent.
4. Can A Family Camping Tent Withstand Bad Weather?
Sometimes when you’re out camping, you really can’t predict what the weather will do. Before you leave to go camping, you should always check the forecast to make sure it will be clear and sunny while you’re camping. However, keep in mind that the weather can change at any given time and sometimes it does. Sometimes it changes for the worst actually. If this happens, you will be safe in your family camping tent. That is unless a tornado is coming right for you.
Modern family camping tents can withstand most weather with no problems at all. I myself have been in tents when it started to hail and the wind was 35 mph+. Nothing ever happened though. These tents are built to withstand the possibility of a potential bad storm.
However, if tornado type weather is on its way, you might not want to be in your tent. These tents will not be able to stand up to 75 mph+ winds on most occasions. Bigger brand name tents are built for higher wind speeds in the mountains etc, but most family camping tents will not be able to stand those kinds of winds.
If you’re just dealing with the occasional thunderstorm with moderate winds, a few rain pours, and maybe a little hail, these tents will be just fine. You will stay dry and you will not blow away.
5. Do Family Camping Tents Have Rooms?
If you take a look at our 10 best family camping tents below, you will notice that some are rectangular shaped and others are more dome-shaped. This shape is pretty common with family camping tents. The reason for this is because family camping tents are designed so that they can be sectioned off and give the “adults” some privacy.
Normally with the rectangular tents, there is a divider that goes right down the center of the tent. This gives the kids one side and gives the adults the opposite side. With dome-shaped tents, sometimes there are 2 or 3 smaller rooms. Usually, you will have the bigger section in the middle that acts as the main part of the dome. Then you will have a small room at either end of the tent, and sometimes there will be a small room in the rear of the tent as well.
The privacy is nice because some people like to fall asleep before others and the divided rooms can help block off lantern lights if someone is staying up to read or something like that. But to answer the question, yes, family camping tents do have rooms.
