What Is The Best Metal Detector? | Discover The Best Metal Detectors
If you’re someone who loves old stuff, I bet you’ve thought about metal detecting at some point. You’ve probably gone as far as asking yourself “What is the best metal detector?”.
Whether you’re an antique enthusiast, a pro metal detector, or a beginner, finding old relics is quite fun. We all want to hit the jackpot and even though it’s extremely rare, we all think about it. Most of the time it’s just old garbage and junk but even that stuff can be cool to find.
Think about it this way, when you go out metal detecting and you pull up an old oil can from the early 1900s, that’s pretty cool! Now it’s likely not worth anything but it’s still cool to find something like that. It’s a psychological thing, you think about the life that can had over 100 years ago and it just feels pretty cool.
A few of us on the Gnarloc Product Reviews team go metal detecting regularly so we know what’s involved. For the beginners out there who are thinking about getting into it, we’re going to show you some cool devices today. Precisely, we’re going to show you the top 5 best metal detectors that are on the market – for regular use.
Lucky for us, we were given the opportunity to test eight different metal detectors. Out of those eight, we chose five that we thought were the overall best. We chose our top five based on numerous factors such as ease of use, overall popularity, control box accuracy, and search coil accuracy.
1. Metal Detecting Tips For Beginners
How excited are you for this brand new hobby of metal detecting? It’s quite fun, I can promise you that. Depending on what you find, metal detecting can be quite lucrative as well “if you get lucky”.
Before you go out on your first adventure, there are some things you must know first. Below you will find some of the best tips we have to offer for beginner treasure hunters.
Lower Your Expectations
You will notice that when you go out, you’re going to find more trash than you will treasure. To some people the “trash” that you find might not even be “trash”, but to you, it is since it’s not valuable. Most of the time you’ll find tons of pennies, bottle caps, and rusted cans. Don’t give up though, persistence is the key when it comes to searching for treasure!
This is pretty self-explanatory but the more you go out and search, the better your chances are at finding something good!
Get The Best Metal Detector You Can Afford
If you’re on a small budget, still get the absolute best metal detector that your money can buy. Don’t be a cheap-ass when it comes to quality. If you get a good detector in the beginning, you’ll learn a lot and you won’t have to “upgrade” for something better for quite a while.
Avoid Busy Times
The last thing you want is to be metal detecting in public and all a sudden you have a crowd of people watching you. Instead, scope out the area first and make sure it’s not crowded with people. You don’t want to spend all your time answering questions that random onlookers might have for you. That would get annoying real fast.
Go For Everything
When you’re first starting out, you won’t know the different signals. This is normal so dig up everything that you get a hit on. You never know, one of those signals just might be something spectacular!
6. Go Out After It Rains
When the ground is wet, it’s dirtier, but the ground is also softer and you’ll be able to dig much easier. This will help in situations where you get a hit that’s significantly deep underground.
Respect The Earth
When you’re out metal detecting and you dig up a hole, fill it back in. Don’t leave trash behind either. Respect the land that you’re digging on and the earth you are standing on as well.
Always Bring A Sack With You
You will need something to collect your finds, which is why you will want to bring a bag or some sort of sack with you. Even if all you find is trash, put it in the sack. Don’t leave that trash behind. In addition, if you take the trash with you, it means you won’t pick it up the next time you go out either!
Be Nice To Onlookers
If people “do” end up coming out by you because they are curious, don’t be a dick to them. Just be respectful and put on a happy face. The last thing you want is some random dude starting a fight with you because you treated him with disrespect while trying to find treasure.
Don’t Detect Too Fast
We’ve seen this before in our own adventures. If you move too fast, you will miss hits! If you miss a hit, that’s not going to be good because it could be that one treasure that you have been dying to find! Go slow and steady and make sure you cover all your ground.
Go To The Beaches As Often As You Can
Beaches are big for finding the good stuff. People lose their jewelry ALL THE TIME when they’re at the beach. You’ll find earrings, bracelets, rings, and sometimes you’ll find other random items there as well. Overall though, the beaches are where the gold is at!
Reach Out To The Pros
It doesn’t hurt to reach out to people who have been metal detecting for years. They might be able to give you some very useful tips that you can use. In addition, this will help you become a better metal detector as well.
