Top 5 Best Riding Lawn Mowers | For A Clean And Good Looking Lawn

If you’re in the market to find the best riding lawn mowers, then you’ve clicked on the right article! These powerful riding lawn mowers can basically do all the work of mowing for you. In addition, they are extremely easy to operate these days as well.

Riding lawn mowers are great for anyone with a large property and for others who don’t want to deal with the hassle of pushing around a heavy push mower. Although, we did do a review on the best electric push lawn mowers as well and those are pretty cool because they’re battery operated and don’t weigh as much as a gas push mower.

However, deciding on the right type of lawnmower can be confusing. A riding lawnmower is a perfect alternative to the standard walk-behind mower, allowing you to drive the machine around your yard.

We visited The Home Depot and were allowed to test drive all five of the riding lawn mowers we’re going to show you today. In total, we spent 6 hours test-driving these mowers and over 30 hours gathering research and reviews from sales associates and in-store customers who have recently bought these riding lawn mowers. We hope you enjoy the article and if you have any questions about them, feel free to leave us a comment below the article.

1. What To Look For When Buying A Riding Lawn Mower

Riding lawn mowers are the best way to mow larger yards with ease. They deliver professional results and require fractions of effort compared to walk-behind push mowers. Before you purchase a new riding lawn mower, there are a few different factors that need to be taken into consideration. Below we will list all the main factors that should be in consideration when you’re in the market for a new riding lawnmower.

Fuel Capacity

When you’re looking for a new riding lawn mower to buy, you want to make sure the gas tank holds enough gasoline to keep you on the lawn without having to refill all the time. Each mower is different and each one varies in size when it comes to fuel capacity.

The main thing to be concerned about is you don’t want to purchase a mower with a smaller fuel capacity if you have a very large yard. However, if you have a “smaller” large yard in a neighborhood, then you can probably get by with a smaller gas tank. If you’re in the country and have a very big yard, you’re going to need a larger fuel capacity.

Engine Horsepower

For those of you who may not think that engine horsepower doesn’t matter, think again because it definitely does matter, depending on what your yard looks like. Engine horsepower is the measurement used to describe the engine’s power output. This power output is what is available to be shared between all the various components of these riding lawn mowers such as it’s transmission and cutting blades.

The more horsepower output the engine provides, the more power that can be distributed between various tasks such as moving from one side of the lawn to the other, or climbing up hills, etc. Horsepower also matters when it comes to providing ample cutting power to the blades to be able to cut thick grass with ease.

Mower Deck Cut-Width

The mower deck cut-width measures how wide of a pass the mower is able to cut. Smaller mowers (usually for smaller yards) usually have cut-widths of around 30″. Riding lawn mowers are much larger and are equipped with cut-widths of up to 48″ or more! That’s 4 feet of grass getting cut in just one pass! The wider your cut-width, the less time it will take to mow your large lawn.

However, if your large property has many obstacles, then a mower with a large and wide cut-width may not be suitable considering it might be a bit tough to maneuver around them. If you have obstacles like this, you might be better off with a riding mower cut-width of 42″ instead. If your lawn is large, open, and has no obstacles or just a few, then go big! The larger cut-width will save you lots of time in the long run.

Transmission

Transmissions transfer power from the engine to the wheels, which allow the riding lawn mower to drive forward or backward. With riding lawn mowers, there are basically three different options when it comes to transmissions. Riding lawn mowers come with manual transmissions, automatic transmissions, or hydrostatic transmissions.

Manual transmissions have a set range of speeds that you can select on your own. Back in the day, you used to have to push a clutch (like you would in a car) to shift between speeds or to stop the mower. However, this method is no longer preferred. But, if you are choosing a manual model, make sure it’s one that allows you to easily shift without using a clutch while the mower is moving.

Automatic transmissions allow you to control the speed of your mower with your gas pedal. This method gives you much more control over your ride, especially when it comes to slowing down to avoid obstacles etc.

Hydrostatic transmissions are similar to automatic transmissions and seem to be the preferred transmission type on most riding lawnmowers these days. These types of transmissions use fluids instead of belts to transfer power from the engine to the wheels. This fluid system gives you the smoothest ride on the market and requires very little maintenance as well.

2. What Size Mower Deck Do I Need?

When deciding on a mower deck size, you want to take a few things into consideration. Ask yourself these questions, “Do I Have Obstacles In My Yard?”, “Is My Yard Big With Barely Any Obstacles?”. Answering these three questions will save you a ton of time when you’re deciding on what size mower deck you should be buying with your riding lawnmower. But, we’re going to help you answer these questions below.

If you have obstacles in your yard, you’re going to want to stick with a smaller mower deck. The reason why is because a larger mower deck will make it difficult to maneuver around these obstacles. We recommend sticking to a mower deck of 42″ if you have any obstacles such as trees, sheds, bushes, gardens, etc.

If your yard is big with very little obstacles, then it’s best to get a riding lawn mower with a larger deck. You can easily get by with a 48″ – 50″ mower deck or even larger if you wish. Having a larger mower deck and not having obstacles will save you a ton of time in the long run.

3. Are Riding Lawn Mowers Good With Hills?

When we were gathering information at The Home Depot, this was one of our main questions because there’s a lot of people out there with a property that has at least one or two hills. Driving by these properties I always wonder how they mow their grass on the hill with a riding lawnmower. Come to find out, most riding lawn mowers are equipped with more than enough power to climb a decent-sized slope without any lag.

Back in the early 2000s, riding lawn mowers used to lag quite a bit when trying to climb a decently sloped hill. However, small engines have become much more efficient since then and can tackle these hills with ease.

If you’re looking for a riding lawn mower and have hills on your property, it would be best to get a riding lawn mower with at least a 19 HP engine. Most riding lawn mowers have at least 19 HP so finding one shouldn’t be an issue. The mowers we’re going to show you today all have plenty of power to climb hills.
